About me

My name is Heather Nicolson, thank you for taking the time to visit my website.  As a person-centred counsellor I have a professional obligation to my clients, and adhere to the good practice guidance and ethical standards set by the governing bodies, BACP & COSCA, of which I am a member. I am passionate about my work and diligent in continuing my professional development.

Having worked as an administrator within the NHS for 20 years, and latterly in education I consider myself to be a people person and a good listener. I began my counselling journey after a particularly challenging period in my own life. Having witnessed the transformative impact of counselling on others I was inspired to find out more. I enrolled on the counselling skills modules at Aberdeen University and began training as a volunteer at a generic counselling agency in Aberdeen.    As Rogers theory came alive for me, through reading and client work, I found I had an aptitude for the work and a passion for the process; it made sense to carry on and study for my Diploma – I like to think counselling chose me, rather than I chose counselling.

I believe my key strength is my ability to create and maintain therapeutic working relationships based on person-centred core values which put client needs at the centre of the work and places emphasis on empathy, acceptance, and congruence (being real in the relationship). These values align with my personal belief system and are now deeply imbedded in my way of being.
